![]() ![]() ![]() The story also paints a vivid picture of the daily lives of African slaves and their masters in those times. Mattie’s journey through these times and how this affects Lisbeth constitute the main themes in this story. This is also at the time when slaves were given the freedom to live as free and independent people in some states in the United States of America and Mattie’s husband is determined to take the brave step to escape with his family from slavery to Ohio. Mattie and Lisbeth form a peculiar bond as Lisbeth grows older which seems absurd to most people especially Lisbeth’s family. ‘Yellow Crocus‘ follows Mattie, a slave girl separated from her own baby to nurse the newborn child (Lisbeth) of her owners in Virginia, USA. This is also my first book by the author, and I went into reading it not knowing what to expect apart from what I had gathered from a few reviews I read about the book. ![]() This year, I have decided to spread my wings a bit farther towards the Americas and this book was a start for me. However, most of my reading in this genre have been focused on European and Asian history. ![]() ![]() ![]() The story reminds me a lot of the classic struggle between the houses of York and Lancaster in English history. Good guys and bad guys stand out and you either love them or hate them but you will never forget them. The writing is good and the characters and personalities are vivid. I liked The Vanished Knight because I like medieval warfare and internecine strife. The story unfolds slowly but the personalities, both good and bad are apparent from the start. Here the mysteries are slowly revealed and the girl who has lived most of her life as an outsider begins to make friends and discover who she really is. ![]() ![]() The entity makes her life unbearable until she becomes the ward of the wealthy Braden family and is sent to an expensive private school with her foster brothers James and Ward. The protagonist is a young orphan girl, Callan who is cursed with dreams and visions by an entity inside her that she cannot control or understand. The Vanished Knight is the first book in the War of Six Crowns series by M Gerrick. Sample Book Review… on Sample Book Review Promotion Announceme… on Promotion Announcement! It’s about a community and different families who are all part of a fictitious university town in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. What is it about, and where did the first nugget of inspiration come from? I’d love to start with your sharing a little about Reputation. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. ![]() ![]() Shepard spoke to Fortune about Reputation, her incredibly prolific career-and what it is about the books she writes that leaves readers begging for more. Like all of Shepard’s work, it is an inarguable page-turner filled with murder, intrigue, and female characters who are somehow simultaneously easy to adore and loathe. Reputation follows the goings-on in a university community after a hack lands everyone’s private business squarely in the public eye. If the title isn’t a dead giveaway, Reputation also involves another Shepard trademark: the often massive gulf between who a person pretends to be and who they really are. “I heard it called a ‘domestic thriller,’’’ Shepard says, defining her new book. Shepard’s stories have a few hallmarks: They are mysteries about women or teen girls usually taking place in Pennsylvania towns they often involve the spooky or sinister side of technology and whether these stories are being read or watched, they are filled with cliff-hangers so juicy you can’t turn away. ![]() |
